Burn Your Bra

Putting the "play" back in Playtex.

Here's some weird/pretty to start your day. Sculptor Laura Jacobs ...

Y'know, we just don't quite know how to finish that sentence. Sculptor Laura Jacobs makes bras. We'll let her web site explain better than we can:

"Laura Jacobs: Wallflowers
Burn your bra. The phrase doesn't get much voice anymore, as the advancement of feminism is countered by today's ever-present porn industry and freaky surgery makeovers. The surreal circus-like atmosphere in which we live, make the bras of Laura Jacobs no less startling. Incorporating everything from crab claws and fish heads to antique glass and mother of pearl, their wall-borne, gravity-defying flight gives voice to the shapes that lie behind, concealed like soft pills of great potency...

We are here, you want to look at us. Breasts are symbols of -- and vehicles for -- power.. Like the twinned temples of Angkor Wat or any ancient shrine, Jacobs has made temples to befit them, define them and sometimes hold them, in ridicule."

There's something both clever and thought-provoking about the collection. Boobs are at the same time fetishized and normalized in western culture, to the point that the basic shape of a bra is so ubiquitous that you can literally apply any kind of meaning or story at all to it. And that's essentially exactly what she's done. The idealized set of breasts is an image that's become part of our daily wallpaper. Why not dress it up to see what you can say about that?

Even if you reject the more esoteric reading ("the twin temples of Angkor Wat?") of these pieces, you have to admit they're kind of fun. Every plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills should buy one of these for their waiting room.
